10 Jeans Styles Besides Skinny

Dying to shed your skinnies? These trousers can boost your style quotient and get you out of a rut (always welcome!).

1. Flat-Front Trouser Jeans

Do you find jeans way too casual? This could be your answer. Flat-front trouser jeans in a dark wash (with a front crease) look smarter and can totally be worn on your casual Friday without worrying you look unkempt. I'm a sucker for this style, although I do have one criticism -- more of these trousers should have belt loops! What gives? They are the perfect jeans to wear with belts, too.

2. Scrunchy-Leg Straights

Straight-legged jeans are the way to go if you are attempting to wean yourself off of a skinny addiction slowly. Straight-legged jeans are the next step in the relaxed jean line and are available in every rinse and every shape out there. I have a thing for J. Crew straight-legged jeans (although they don't fit me), and I regularly browse for jeans with a similar premium-denim vibe. While I don't like whiskering details across the lap, I don't mind them near the knee.

3. Wide Leg Jeans

Where are my clogs? I always feel like I am getting ready for a '70s-theme party when I slip into my wide leg jeans, but heck -- at least I'm getting some sort of feeling from them (as opposed to boring old jeans that don't get you dreaming either way). I like the thought of a pair of wide-legs in a light wash, although for whatever reason, I usually see them in dark washes instead.

4. Baby Bells

Hmmm, flares or bell-bottoms? In my world, it's bells all the way! Flares have their own appeal, but if you're going to go big, why not go all the way with your silhouette and make it look ultra-dramatic? It sounds like a dream to me! One of the nicest pairings I saw with bell bottoms was a plain white button-down and designer sunglasses. It looked like a dream.

5. Slim Fits

Forget the word slim -- what I'm really going after is a trim cut. Slim fit jeans take in a nip under the buttocks, a tuck from behind the knees, and a fold or two where fabric usually just sits around to look awkward at the worst moment. These jeans are probably not 5-pocket, and they are all the better for it -- they have a certain something that makes you look so put-together.

6. High-Waisted

Can't get rid of those skinnies, no matter how hard you try? Maybe it's time to consider wearing high-waisted skinnies at least, which give you a different look than the low-rise styles. You can find these jeans in a lot of cool colors for the season, too, so they are worth looking into. I recently saw pink and pistachio pairs that were utterly yummy.

7. Boyfriend Jeans

Did Jennifer Aniston ruin the boyfriend jeans? Sometimes I think she did, because I have perfect visions of her traipsing around New York with her hunk of a man, wearing ratty boyfriend jeans and looking effortlessly cool (oh, and very wealthy besides). You can find pairs with frayed hole-y spots in addition to bleach spots and whiskering. It all depends on how far you want to take them.

8. Cropped

Wheee, high waters! These jeans are cooler in the summer and easier to tuck in your boots come winter. While it's not always easy figuring out what shoes to wear with them, they are a stellar investment during the hotter months.
